Side Projects, Side Hustles, and the Side Effects of Hustle Culture

The word 'hustle' follows students everywhere.
Start a side project.
Do an internship.
Build your LinkedIn profile.
At first, it feels exciting. Everyone is doing something extra: coding apps, freelancing, content creation, even running startups from their dorm rooms. And you feel like you should too.
But here’s what no one talks about: the side effects.
Some students stay up all night juggling projects, only to burn out before exams. Others compare themselves to peers and wonder, 'Am I doing enough?' Even when you achieve something, it rarely feels like enough because the hustle never ends.
Don’t get me wrong — side projects and hustles are amazing. They teach skills no classroom ever could. But the problem starts when hustle turns into pressure, curiosity turns into comparison, and passion turns into exhaustion.
After a few years of living in this cycle, here’s what I realized:
Productivity without balance becomes poison.
Not every hobby has to be monetized.
Sometimes, doing nothing is the most important project of all.
College is not a startup pitch deck. It’s a phase of life. And it’s okay if your biggest achievement some days is simply staying sane.
